Bonsmara
BONSMARA are known for good adaptability and more cost effective production off the veld. Well adapted Bonsmara animals can be identified by the following:
- Smooth coat in summer;
- Well-pigmented eyes, udders and hooves;
- Strong constitution and
- Sound feet and legs
These cattle have good mothering ability and calves are produced off the natural pasture at a low cost.
Traits are early puberty, early rapid growth and breed at 12 – 18 months of age. This breed has ease of calving and are fertile.
As a beef animal it has good milking ability, resulting in high weaning with low mortality.
Growth is maintained in harsh conditions, however these animals round off very well in feedlots with good grading even at a young age.
Bonsmara are docile animals, easy to handle and as a result require less labour and are great cross breeding animals bred to perform in a wide variety of environments.
Of particular interest to us is that the Bonsmara have a deep cherry red coat, ideal for the hot climates.
